Feedback is the Breakfast of Champions

May 1, 2021

If you have taken part in the Sub30 Core Restore Pre & Postnatal Workshop you would have heard me talk about American Author Ken Blanchard. Blanchard coined the phrase “Raving Fans” and it is a term that I have built my fitness businesses on. (I will save that for another blog)

He also coined another important phrase: Feedback is the Breakfast of Champions.

Today I spoke with Jono Petrohilos on this very topic. Jono is the co-owner of Fitness Education Online and the 2020 Fitness Educator of the Year. He thrives on feedback and believes it is one of the main reasons for his success within the fitness industry. This is what he had to say.

“Bad Trainers avoid feedback at all costs because they are worried it is going to be negative. Chances are they are probably going to stay bad trainers because they do not know what they need to improve. Average Trainers look at feedback like a test, the more positive the feedback, the better they scored, and they are probably going to stay average. For as long as they are getting a decent score, they don’t see a reason to change.

Amazing Trainers actively seek out the negative feedback to find that 1% that they could be doing better, and then they improve on that! That is the reason they are amazing!

Me personally, I love negative feedback. I do not care whether someone score’s me a 1/10 or a 9/10. My answer is going to be the same either way. What could I have done better or differently to be a 10/10?

Because there is no point in getting upset or depressed about the person who gave me a 1, I can’t go back and change their experience. But, I can improve my service, so I never get a 1 again”
